DoctorsWe are always in need of Optometrists to do free exams for the children in our program. We carefully pre-screen all of our referrals to insure that you are only seeing children who are truly in need, and at-risk of academic failure. We ask for a commitment of between one and four exams per month. After you agree, we will deliver a 12 piece frame kit to your office so the child can choose a frame and color that we stock at our lab. We do extensive follow-up with all of our referrals in order to keep the no-show rate low. You are the heart of our program. Without the generosity of volunteer Optometrists in the Bay Area, hundreds of students would still not be able to see their world clearly. Vision Screeners and Support staff:Because of the challenging financial situation in the State of California, each school district has a different approach to vision screening. Some use over-worked staff nurses and some contract the job out. In every case though, if a student fails the screening, the parent is notified. We ask the support staff to include a letter from JVQ California as part of the communication with the parent if they need additional information to qualify a student. It is ultimately the job of the Support staff, whether a Nurse, Student Health Coordinator, or School Secretary to qualify the student for our program. The criteria are: 1 - The family must not have health insurance that includes vision 2 – The family must have financial need (if the child qualifies for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program, then that should be enough) Once you have determined if the child qualifies for the program, simply fill out the left side of the JVQCA Referral Form, and fax it to the number in the upper left hand corner.
